Competitive COMPKART at US Trophy East RD1

Competitive COMPKART at US Trophy East RD1

June 24, 2024

The US Trophy East series kicked off in June at Motorsports Country Club (MCC), a beautiful complex facility that provides both slow and fast range corners creating a challenging condition for drivers and mechanics alike.  The event hosted all the normal Rotax categories with RMC Grand Final tickets award to the series champions in Mini MAX, Sr MAX and Masters MAX.

COMPKART entered the following drivers in its official team:

Oliver Hodgson – Sr MAX
Cooper O’Clair – Sr MAX
Theo Kekati – Sr MAX

Conner Lypka – Mini MAX

Derek Wargo – Jr MAX

The event started well with Thursday and Friday being open to customary open testing with the team slotting in nicely with all drivers as the build up to the racing weekend encroached. “The circuit here is a relative challenge with such slow corners mixed with a very long straight the management of engine is something that takes more attention to detail than most circuits.  At the end of the event we had a very good solution for our drivers which enabled them all to battle at the front of  the field with O’Clair winning in Sr while Hodgson has some bad luck was still able to recover with a good result and the fastest lap and even in Mini or Conner Lypka displayed front running pace the entire event.” — Team Management

COMPKART sets the score at Rotax US Trophy West series

May 23, 2024

The US Trophy West series concluded this past weekend with a doubleheader event at the beautiful Grand Junction Motorspeedway facility in Grand Junction, Colorado.  The COMPKART team fielded three drivers in Senior MAX; Theo Kekati, Cooper O’Clair and Gio Santora and alongside the three drivers was Micro MAX driver Conner Lypka.

After the two days of practice, it was Santora who set the benchmark by qualifying pole with is two teammates hot on his tale.  As the day progressed on Saturday (two heats and a final) the final came down to last lap excitement as O’Clair was able to best Kekati for the win  and a cool $2,500 prize while Santora battled hard to finish eight after a PBB penalty took him just off the podium.  In Micro MAX Lypka was able to battle consistently in the lead pack throughout the day, but the action yielded the young driver some unfavorable positioning and he ended the day in a solid fourth place finish.

Sunday’s final day of action proved to be nothing short of action packed as the Senior MAX trio was able to take the top three spots again this time with O’Clair taking first, Santora second and Kekati third.  The heats were exciting as they lead into a last lap battle in the final again between Kekati and O’Clair with Kekati getting the win this time as O’Clair crossed the line in second and Santora took home a well-deserved fifth place.  In Micro MAX Lypka improved on Sunday with taking second overall after heat race classifications, thus setting up an exciting final run where he was able to finish on the box in third place.

COMPKART – Cooper O’Clair set for 2021

• Timely boost for talented Scottsdale racer as he heads into ‘important year’
• 12-year-old karter joins leading agency’s grass-roots development program
• Arizonan to be schooled in all elements required to forge a successful career

2021 will see young Arizona resident Cooper O’Clair join WH Management as he aims to elevate his career in motorsports.  O’Clair you is relatively new to the motorsports arena has already amassed a solid resume within the region whereby he has been supported very successfully by COMPKART partner Phoenix Kart Rentals.  Looking outside the region with focus on growth, Cooper O’Clair will lean to a more national based program in 2021 with the continuation of the COMPKART brand and factory for his support structure.

WH Sports has already carved out an enviable reputation in the industry for spotting and nurturing motorsport stars while simultaneously brokering high-profile sports sponsorship agreements on a global scale, and O’Clair is the latest addition to the organization’s stable of talented athletes.

In just two short years, the Arizonan has made great strides in karting – although his career began in a different discipline. Thrown on a pair of skis at a young age and subsequently motocross bikes, O’Clair quickly learned how to handle a sport that requires high speed and precision. He didn’t step into the cockpit of a kart until November, 2018 at the age of ten – but despite his comparatively late start, progress has been swift.

Last year marked his break-out season at regional level, dominating the PKRA Super Showdown in his hometown of Phoenix and winning the California ROK Championship in the fiercely-contested Junior 100cc category.

For 2021, Cooper has been promoted to the J3 Competition/Compkart works team, where he will be supported by veteran team manager Justin Stefani and KZ factory driver Kol Bailey, who recently joined WH Sports’ Driver Performance Program in North America as a driver coach and karting specialist.

O’Clair’s target for the forthcoming campaign will be to contest races at the iconic Circuit of The Americas (COTA) and to progress to United States Pro Kart Series (USPKS), ROK Cup and SKUSA Pro Tour rounds throughout the year.

Giacomo Sgarbossa, Athlete Representative, WH Sports, said:

“We are very happy to welcome Cooper as the first member of our WH Sports Driver Performance Program in North America. Over the past 12 months, we have focused on creating a grass-roots development model in motorsport, to replicate that which mainstream sports such as football, tennis, golf and rugby successfully provide to their top young sportsmen and sportswomen.

“Whilst enjoyment and love of their sport is paramount, helping a young driver to understand early on the degree of commitment and dedication required to become a professional athlete at international level is something that we feel needs reinforcing.

“Cooper is clearly naturally very fast and eager to learn, and in just his first two years of racing, he has already achieved some very strong results. Driver coaching, mentorship, fitness and mental training are the main areas that we will concentrate on with him, and we look forward to seeing his progress.”

Cooper O’Clair, Athlete, WH Sports, added:

“The last two years have been amazing, and I can’t express how thankful I am to be where I am now – but we can’t stop here! 2021 will be an important year for me as I start racing nationally and eventually move up to the X30 class. My whole life has been devoted to karting since day one, and I plan to continue this and strive for more.

“Motorsport has never been remotely easy, and never will be. Watching the TV when I was little and pretending I was a race car driver is one of my earliest memories, and now that I have grown up and begun racing myself, I appreciate the commitment required not only for the driving part, but also everything behind-the-scenes – from physical fitness to nutrition, mental resilience and media interaction. You need to beat the best if you want to be the best.

“This is something that I couldn’t do on my own, so I’m excited to join WH Sports to help me achieve my goals. Their group of trained professionals with experience from Formula 1, IndyCar and other high-profile championships is beyond my wildest dreams. My excitement levels are through the roof!”
